“The hardest thing I’ve ever had to overcome? Being young and running a business. I started working for the company at 16, helping out in the office between school. By 20, I was the major shareholder. Now, I run it outright.
Staffing has been the biggest challenge. Good people make all the difference and navigating that dynamic - especially as a young person, is tricky. But I’ve always had this no-nonsense approach: what you see is what you get. There’s no secret trick.
I realized around 17 that I wouldn’t want to do anything else. School wasn’t my thing - I did okay, but I hated it. NCEA Levels 1 and 2 got me through, but the idea of running this business and building something just clicked. Palmy is my home. I was born here, and I don’t see myself leaving. There’s something about this place that keeps you grounded.
I’ve always admired the Queen of England. I’m a total royalist. Things are just better when a women is in charge, aren’t they? She’s had the biggest impact on me, even from afar. As for advice to my younger self? Just do it. Don’t overthink - trust yourself and go for it.
I came out at 19, and that was a turning point for me. Now, I live with my partner, Kane, who I met online. He moved here from Hamilton, and we’ve got a Japanese Spitz named Freddie, who’s basically the boss of the house.
If I wasn’t doing this, I’d probably be stuck in some sales role. But this is where I’m meant to be. I don’t care about titles. People who own businesses just to say they own businesses? They shouldn’t be in business. It’s about the work, not the bragging rights.
At WindowTrendz, we’re all about supporting local. Our curtains are made right here in New Zealand by a talented team of sewers who care deeply about what they do. It’s not just about creating quality products that last - it’s about connections and community.
Palmy is my home, and I’m here for the long haul. No tricks, just me doing what I love.”
